High Bandwidth

A crystal ball is not part of a business start-up kit nor is it something that you can rent so making predicitions about how much bandwidth you might need and when the demand might be highest is a difficult skill.

At EQSN we try to take away the guesswork by teaming up with you to establish a baseline that suits your regular needs. We don't constrain you to a physical limit of say, 2mb/s or 10mb/s, instead we establish a "ceiling" that is used to alert you if things get busy on your site. This is of course established on our resilient network which is engineered to withstand telco failure. We then create a flexible agreement that enables you to burst up to twice this agreed level. In addition, you can burst beyond your level for a period of time without incurring charges.

Measuring Bandwidth

We operate the 95 percentile model for measuring your bandwidth usage. This is a traditional telco system which is extremely flexible both in usage and pricing terms. It works as follows; we monitor your usage by sampling the speed you are using each five minutes for the entire month. At the end of the month we take the top 5% speeds measured and discard them, whatever the highest speed remaining is the level at which you are charged. In real terms this means that you can operate above your contracted level for up to 36 hours (5% of a month) without incurring any additional charges. So, although you may be contracted for 512kb/s you may find that for a few hours a month you need to burst to 2mb/s; this would not incur any additional charges.
